Job Opening

The University of Missouri-Kansas City, located near the Country Club Plaza in Kansas City's midtown area, is one of four campuses in the University of Missouri System. As a comprehensive research institution in a greater metropolitan area of 1.8 million, UMKC serves the region by developing programs appropriate to its mission as an urban university. More than 50 undergraduate and 80 graduate and professional degree programs are available. Of the 12,151 students at UMKC, approximately 60 percent are undergraduates, 27 percent are graduates, and 13 percent are professional students.

The University of Missouri-Kansas City invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the UMKC Women's Center, one of the 11 student affairs directors within the Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. This position reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (Student Development) and provides campus leadership for the activities of this unique Center. Since 1971 the Women's Center has been a leader in creating a forum to address challenges and opportunities affecting women's lives. Our dual focus on both campus and community women is unique among American women's centers.

 

Job Responsibilities:

Provide leadership in developing programs and services that promote the academic, personal and professional achievement of female students and community members. Specific activities include (a) needs assessment, (b) collaboration with various university departments as well as corporate and community leaders to plan and implement collaborative programs and events, (c) promotion and marketing of activities, and (d) program evaluation.

Hire, train and supervise Women's Center three professional and six student staff.

Develop faculty, staff and student awareness and support for women within the university through participation in campus planning activities and campus committees, as well as serving as a campus resource for women's issues.

Provide leadership, direction and assistance to the Advisory Board of the Women's Center and work with the Executive Director of the University's Women's Council to manage and direct the activities of the annual Starr Symposium and the Women's Collaborative.

Provide leadership, direction and assistance to the ReVisioning Women Project, a program developed to address issues relating to women and body image.

Serve as Primary Investigator of the Grant to Reduce Violent Crimes Against Women on Campus, one of the few grants awarded to Women's Centers by the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women.

Provide overall fiscal management of the Center, to include (a) the development and monitoring of the annual operating budget, (b) the identification of and application for grants and contracts with federal, state and private funding sources, and (c) participation in fundraising activities or campaigns managed by the Advancement Officer of the Division of Student Affairs.  Collaborate with faculty in the Women's and Gender Studies Program and other academic units on matters of mutual concern. Participate in professional and civic organizations to maintain professional competence, establish contacts and enhance the university's image.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

* Master's degree, preferably in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, Women's Studies, Sociology, or other relevant field

* A minimum of four years progressive administrative experience in women's programming and advocacy

* Commitment to and understanding of issues related to women and diversity

* Demonstrated collaboration and experience with community organizations and volunteers

* Staff supervision and management

* Strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

* Budgeting experience

* Successful grant-writing experience

* Experience in an urban educational environment with both traditional and non-traditional students

POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: The University of Idaho invites applications and nominations for the position of Director for Diversity and Community. This position is a 12-month, 1.0 FTE appointment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Director reports directly to the president. The Director for Diversity and Community will articulate and provide leadership in continuing, adapting and initiating university and community-wide programs to support enrichment of the learning environment through diversity; foster institutional change in every area of University life; facilitate and foster diversity-related curriculum development and teaching; coordinate and facilitate diversity-related activities, including the development and implementation of comprehensive strategies for the recruitment of a diverse workforce and student body; facilitate the redesign of the University’s diversity recruitment and retention strategies in partnership with related University staff to enhance the educational, scholarship and engagement environments.

The Director for Diversity and Community participates as a member of the President’s Cabinet.

Functional Supervision:  Sexual Assault Support Services

Staff Supervision: Assistant Coordinator, Sexual Assault Support Services 

Schedule Note: 40 hours/week, 12 months.  Occasional night/weekend emergency response. 

Nature of Responsibilities

The SASS Coordinator oversees campus response to sexual and relationship violence. S/he provides advocacy, crisis support, information and referral for students affected by sexual and relationship violence and their families and friends.  Along with the Assistant SASS Coordinator and SHARP undergraduate peer educators, s/he designs and implements preventative education programs on sexual and relationship violence for the Duke University community. The SASS Coordinator keeps current with national trends in the field and works with Duke Police, Student Affairs, Durham Crisis Response Center, and other campus and community partners to ensure effective response to interpersonal violence. 

Specific Duties

* Provide advocacy, crisis support, information and referral to students affected by sexual and relationship violence and their families and friends ­ including emergency response as needed.

* In concert with Womenıs Center director, manage the Sexual Assault Support Services budget

* Provide trainings to staff, faculty, and community partners such as Duke Police, the Undergraduate Judicial Board, and Residence Life staff.

* Supervise the Assistant SASS Coordinator in planning, marketing, and presenting educational programs on sexual and relationship violence in concert with SHARP peer educators

* Chair/serve on committees and task forces as necessary to help the University shape a comprehensive response to sexual and relationship violence

* Advise and consult with a variety of student groups

* Keep current with national trends

* Provide education and support to other departments and units to allow them to respond effectively to sexual and relationship violence.

* Assist with other Womenıs Center projects as needed 

General Qualifications

Minimum educational requirement: Masterıs degree in counseling, social work, or related field; licensed clinician strongly preferred. Require 3-5 years experience with sexual violence prevention and services including some experience in a university setting. 

Specific Skills and Competencies

Position requires thorough understanding of sexual violence in a college community and ability to work with a diverse array of survivors of sexual and relationship violence, both male and female. Must be able to provide crisis support and advocacy in an ethical manner consistent with the practices of Student Affairs, and make appropriate referrals to on and off-campus services. The successful candidate will demonstrate comprehension of a broad range of gender issues and be familiar with college student development and university systems. Knowledge of and experience with prevention education and peer education models are assets, as are expertise in marketing, public speaking, program design and program evaluation.  Strong interpersonal, communication and writing skills are essential, as is the ability to build collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders.

Prior management experience a plus.

faculty, staff students, and alumnae.  Develop and implement marketing

materials and publicity plans for Center's events. Maintain and develop the

Center's web site.  Assess the constituency needs and makes appropriate

referrals to campus and outside campus resources.  Monitor expenses, process

fund transfers and payments, maintain financial records for all areas and

members of the department. Hire, train, and supervise 8-person work study

student and volunteer staff.  Serve as Center's newsletter production

coordinator, assisting in securing newsletter contributions, facilitating

editorial board meetings, advising on content, proof reading, and assuring

that all aspects of newsletter production move smoothly and on schedule.

Web design or editing experience helpful.
